Is it true that India qualified for Fifa World Cup?

I was shocked to hear that India once qualified for Fifa World Cup. Is that true? Can you give more information on this? and why is that India not getting selected to Fifa World Cup these days? Sports is always meant to be cricket in India. Why is that no one giving importance to Football in India? Everyone are ready to support some X countries but not there own country in this which is really sad.. :(

Yes, that's right India qualified once for Fifa World Cup, not by having won the qualifying matches but just by luck. 1950 was the year when it happened which was fourth Fifa World Cup held in Brazil and India was added to Group 3 by default since teams Philippines, Indonesia and Burma from Asia withdrew at the end.

So, India was setup in Group 3 along with Italy, Paraguay and Sweden which seemed to be a good competition but later at the start of the matches India also withdrew stating less experience and need to concentrate more on the upcoming Olympics which was planned at the same time.

Right after then it's been 64 years now and not yet once Indian team got qualified to Fifa World Cup. Probably we might know more about Men in Blue (Cricket) these days but how many of us know about our Indian football team who are called to be Blue Tigers?? Maybe as a Indian we would think that there aren't good skilled players like Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane and so on but do we really show some interest to atleast know who are there in our Indian team when we are busy supporting other countries? Here are the list of Indian player names who are currently in the Indian football team,

Sunil Chhetri (Captain)
Subrata Pal
Karanjit Singh
Amrinder Singh
Aiborlang Khongjee
Denzil Franco
Arnab Mondal
Sandesh Jhingan
Narayan Das
Gurjinder Kumar
Clifford Miranda
Mehtab Hossain
Francis Fernandes
Lenny Rodrigues
Lalrindika Ralte
Rocus Lamare
Victorino Fernandes
Alwyn George
Balwant Singh
Robin Singh

The greatest win for Indian football team is again some 29 years back where they finished up as runners in the AFC Asian Cup after then they qualified only once on 2011 where they lost all the matches. So, is there something AIFF (All India Football Federation) need to work hard to make sure Indian football team to be well formed or probably it's just the fan support and importance to given to Indian Football Team rather only on holding to cricket? I think the answer is debatable by each Indian citizen..
