Is it a extension which can be installed and used in Chrome browser? Can you give me details about it?

I just came across the word Omnibox for Chrome Browser? What does that mean?

Is it some kind of extension which can be installed and used in Google Chrome?

No, Omnibox is not an Google extension which have to be installed and used but itís a new feature which comes inbuilt with the latest Chrome browser which is nothing the address bar is called the omnibox which does not acts as a address bar alone but does many more things which are not been expected. For eg. you can even do simple maths calcualtion in your omnibox(Chrome address bar) itself. Just simply type 5*34 in the omnibox you will get the suggestion as answer which is = 170.

You can also change the default search engine from the omnibox by right click on the omnibox and select Edit Search Engines and select the desired search engine which is Google by default. One of the great feature of omnibox is that while typing a website say for eg. you can press the Tab button from keyboard which automatically goes for the search under that website. So whatever you type from the omnibox will search only on the particular site which is mentioned.

Now few months before Chrome have started designing some of other API for the omnibox, one of it is the Switch Tab option. The main use of this API is to search and switch to the tabs which are present in the Chrome browser, once you open some 20+ tabs in a single Chrome browser you will end knowing which tab is for which website so Switch Tab API will make this easy, To install this API

Once you have installed it, you can go to the omnibox and type sw and press Tab key. Now type in the tab name or the website which you are looking for and select the desired option then you can see the tab being opened. There are still more APIs available for Omnibox and still more yet to come which you can very well check and use from the Chrome Web Store.
